Synthesis of perfluoroolefins
Perfluoroolefins are a synthesis product based on hydrocarbon olefins, as a result of which one or more R-groups (CnHn) are replaced by fluorine molecules. In Russia, fluorinated olefins are produced by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Research Institute of Polymers. The suppliers of perfluoroolefin products are ExxonMobil Petroleum & Chemical, Master Chemical Europe and other corporations.
The Rational Technologies company carried out work on a laboratory reactor after evaluating the effectiveness of various production technologies and choosing the optimal one, from an energy and economic point of view. Within the framework of the project, a technology for the modification of hydrocarbon olefins was created and mastered in a pilot reactor with a working capacity of 30 liters. The design of the reactor and the selected synthesis modes provide for an industrial scale production of components for the manufacture of lubricants. Perfluoroolefins are used as raw materials for the production of perfluoroethers.
Benefits of perfluoroolefin products
Replacing the hydrocarbon R-groups of the polymer with 3.5 or 7 fluorine molecules gives the starting material completely new qualities, which significantly increases the added value of the final product.
Examples of the use of perfluoroolefin processing products:
- Lubrication of valve and reduction units of compressor equipment, which is used for pumping aggressive media, because oils with fluorine molecules dissolve only in fluorochlorine solvents.
- Processing of high-voltage contact or sliding disconnectors, because when sparking, the grease does not form carbon deposits on the contact groups.
- They are used as a heat carrier and insulator in power supply systems (transformers of high-voltage substations).
- It is used as a lubricant for high-temperature rotating elements of turbines in aircraft, helicopters and rockets.
- They are used as a grease lubricant for moving elements of satellites, because the range of low and high temperatures is sufficient for space applications. In addition, the grease is not sensitive to radiation.
- It is an additional component for engine oils.
A limitation for wider domestic use and the development of a number of industries is the high cost of imported perfluoroolefins and their derivatives.
